Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare or ACA, is for people who are under 65 and do not have employer group coverage.
The law provides consumers with subsidies (“premium tax credits”) that lower costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. This is believed to make health insurance more affordable for most people. The Act expanded the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the federal poverty level.
One notably famous and controversial provision of the Act is that it covers pre-existing conditions.
When choosing a plan, it’s a good idea to think about your total health care costs, not just the bill (the “premium”) you pay to your insurance company every month.
Other amounts, sometimes called “out-of-pocket” costs, have a big impact on your total spending on health care – sometimes more than the premium itself. Cheaper is not always better.
When you compare plans in the Marketplace, the plans appear in 4 “metal” categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The categories are based on how you and the health plan share the total costs of your care. Silver is the most popular option and the only option available if the individual qualifies for "cost-sharing reductions".
