Term Life Insurance:
Term Life Insurance is life insurance that guarantees payment of a death benefit if the covered person dies during a specified term. Term life policies are typically 10, 15, or 20-year terms but can go as low as 3 and as high as 30. Once the term expires, the policyholder can either renew it for another term at higher costs, convert the policy to permanent coverage (if there is a conversion option in their policy), or allow the term life insurance policy to terminate and possibly consider an alternative insurance option.
A term life policy has no cash value accumulation and doesn't pay anything until the insured passes away. In the simplest of terms, it's not worth anything unless one of you were to die during the course of the term. Only 2% of term life insurance policies every pay out.
